Kate Sheppard - A Woman On A Mission

Kate Sheppard was a New Zealand activist, and one of the most 

important figures in our history. 

She was a leader in the struggle to make New Zealand the first country in the world to grant women the right to vote.


  1. When and where was Kate Sheppard born?

Catherine Wilson Malcolm was born on March 10, 1847, in Liverpool, England.

  1. How old was Sheppard when she moved to New Zealand?

She moved to New Zealand in the late 1860s.

  1. What was something that Sheppard believed women should actively be able to do?

She believed that women should actively participate in all aspects of society, including politics. 

  1. What does NCW stand for?

National Council of Women (NCW)

  1. What were 3 actions that Sheppard took as leader of the NCW to get women their right to vote? 

    1.  She became its first president.

    2.  She supported equality in marriage and the right of women to run for positions in Government.

    3.   However, she remained an important person in the women’s rights movement.

In 1896 Sheppard helped set up the National Council of Women (NCW) and became its first president.

             Sir Āpirana Ngata (Ngāti Porou)


  1. When and where was he born?

           Āpirana Ngata, of Ngāti Porou was born 3rd of July 1874 in Te          

           Araroa on the East Coast of New Zealand’s North Island.  


  1.  Iwi was Apirana Ngata most connected to?

Ngāti Porou was one of the Iwi in New Zealand that had developed close relationships with the British Crown, and  he used these connections to educate himself in the ways of the European politics and law. 


  1. What was he the first Maori person to do?

 He studied hard from the very beginning, eventually earning his way   into Canterbury College and becoming the first Māori in New Zealand to graduate from University.
